Andrew Shaxson

Chair

I have lived in this area all my life, my family having farmed land in Elsted and Harting parishes for 90 years.  I was District Councillor for Harting for 20 years, was elected to serve on Harting Parish Council in 2015, and have been a parish councillor for Elsted since 1987.  I am also a member of the South Downs National Park Authority. Among my interests are planning and local history.  It is likely that Parish Councils will have to carry out tasks currently done by others.  We must be prepared to meet that challenge.

My background is in design engineering. After many years working with military hardware I established my own business specialising in microbiology and environmental instrumentation which I still own and run. I live in South Acre with my wife Ruth. During six years on the Parish Council I have chaired the Finance Committee and played a part on both the Planning and Parks & Open Spaces Committees.  As Chairman of the Horticultural Society, I take an interest in and try to play a part in village life. I enjoy making art and most sporting activities

I was elected to Harting Parish Council in May 2019 as one of the two Councillors for Nyewood.  I have had a long career in the Foreign Service and moved to Nyewood 20 years ago.  I served on the Nyewood events committee for many years and am the current Nyewood Neighbourhood Watch organiser.

My main concerns are local planning and community development for the whole of Harting with particular emphasis on Nyewood.

I joined the parish council last year and am also on the planning committee. I will represent the views of our community and bring an empathetic and unbiased view to the role. My husband and I have lived in Nyewood for 8 years and are involved with fundraising initiatives for the new village hall. I spent many years in education, initially as a teacher, latterly as a special needs coordinator. I was also a member, then chairperson, of two parent teacher associations.

My husband Giles and I moved to South Harting from London during the tempestuous year of 2020. I was very impressed by the Parish Council’s response to the pandemic and could see what an incredibly valuable support and mouthpiece it is to the people of Harting. I am now very proud to be a member of that Council.

After a career of nearly 40 years in technology, initially for IBM and Oracle, I, with two partners founded a executive search company in 2002, specialising in placing technology, finance and HR leaders in all sorts of organisations. Having built our company to over 70 strong, I retired in 2021, retaining an interest in encouraging gender diversity in technology by identifying and nurturing female technology talent.

Since we arrived in the village, I have taken on the role of Honorary Secretary to the Harting Horticultural Society and have enjoyed my work as a volunteer with Harting Primary School, reading with the Year 2s and helping set up the Gardening Club. I look forward to getting ever more involved with life in the Parish.

I was elected to the Parish Council at the elections of May 2019. Since then, It is an honour to serve our local community and try to be an active councillor, I am also a member of the Finance, Highways and Byways (HABAC), and Aims and Objectives Committees. I am particularly keen that communication between residents and its parish Council is honest, open and transparent, and believe that this new website will help promote both better knowledge and profile of our lovely village.  I live in West Harting and also actively represent concerns of the residents there.

Harting is very special to me as I have a lot of family history here; I am the third generation to live in the village and my family have always been active members of the community. I grew up in East Harting where I have been working as part of the family farm for many years. I attended the village school and have also recently bought a house in South Harting with my partner.

Due to the nature of farming, I have developed good relationships with many of the local residents and have found that a lot of people seem to know me (if only for checking sheep on the quad bike with dogs in tow!). I look forward to being more involved in aiding how our community is shaped and feel that, along with my enthusiasm, I have a variety of knowledge and skills that will benefit the council.
