Harting Tree Champion Volunteers start work.

The work to rebuild the woodland at The Warren has started with local volunteers identifying and protecting over 700 sapling trees that have naturally started growing.  Species include native field maple, common beech, dog rose and hazel.

The seedlings are covered by bio spiral guards, made from cornstarch, to protect them from rabbit and vole damage whilst they become established.

Covid pandemic delays community planting days

Hopes that community planting days could be scheduled before Christmas have been dashed by national lockdown restrictions. 

New dates will be planned for early 2021 and work is already underway to agree dates with South Downs National Park Rangers, who will be helping run the planting days, and arboriculturalist Petra Billings who has designed the woodland planting and management plan.

Planting trees is always dependent on weather and the added complications of changing social distancing requirements mean that last minute changes are always possible.  All fingers are crossed for the new year.

Deer Fencing going up

A key priority for ensuring a healthy future for The Warren is protecting the natural re-growth of saplings and other wild plants as well as the newly planted trees.  The best, and most cost effective, way to protect the plants is to install deer fencing around the perimeter of The Warren.  This will only remain in place until the new trees are well established.

The installation of the deer fencing started on 11th November.

Win £150 prize by capturing incredible beauty of night sky. The enchanting Dark Skies of the South Downs National Park will be celebrated this autumn and winter with an awesome astrophotography competition.

There are three categories available to enter:

• South Downs Dark Skyscapes – an image that captures the star-studded Dark Skies of the South Downs National Park. Judges will be looking for awe-inspiring photography that shows off the landscape and/or cultural heritage and the dark skies above it!

• Living Dark Skies: people and nature – any image that captures human or wildlife activity. Ideas include images of people stargazing, people running or walking under the cover of darkness, or images of nocturnal wildlife or trees at night.

• Our Magnificent Moon – judges will be looking for breathtaking shots of our nearest neighbour in the solar

The first prize for each category will be £150,second prize is £75, and third prize is £50. 

Entries must be submitted by midnight on 10th January 2021

Chichester District Council want to hear from you about housing.  Share your views on the council’s strategy and policy aimed to 

• Help tackle excess cold and reduce fuel poverty
• Improve the standard of rented properties
• Assist homeowners that can’t afford repairs to their homes, and
• Support those who are disabled through facilities grants.

The policy also sets out the full range of enforcement powers which are can be used to help improve the standard of rented accommodation in the district.

Now that we are are locked down for a second time The Parish Council Emergency Group (PCEG) has reconvened.  As before we are on hand to make sure that no resident is left without support.

The Buddies are back and on hand to help you.  You will receive an information pack and contact details for your buddy.  Please feel free to contact them if you need help with anything such as shopping or picking up prescriptions if you are locked down.

The National Park Authority is seeking responses to a survey on dog walking behaviour from people who walk dogs in the South Downs National Park including dog owners, as well as those who walk dogs for others, such as dog walking professionals.

This survey is a follow up to one undertaken in 2018 and will help assess how dog walking behaviours have changed over the lifetime of the campaign.

It is part of a campaign called Take the Lead to encourage responsible dog walking and reduce the negative impact of certain dog walking behaviours on heathland and other habitats.

The disused telephone box in West Harting has been renovated to its former glory.

Long since decommissioned by BT the iconic red box is now owned by The Parish Council.

The Tree Council have awarded Harting Parish Council a grant of £32,179.00 towards the regeneration of The Warren which has been so badly affected by ash dieback disease.  

The level of the grant is far more than expected and reflects the confidence this national charity has in the work undertaken to remove diseased trees from the area and the woodland replanting and management plan that will ensure future for this much loved area.

Harting Parish Council have been working with arboriculturists, the Forestry Commission, The Tree Council and other experts to meet the challenge presented by the discovery of ash dieback disease in nearly all the trees at The Warren, resulting in the tree felling last year.  A replanting and woodland management scheme has been developed for our community which will ensure a diverse and healthy woodland can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Southern Water Waste Management Team have warned that the treatment works are struggling to cope with the levels of fat, oil and grease as well as unflushable items experienced in the last 12 months or so.  Only quick action recently prevented pollution of raw sewage.
